π΄ The turn
You open with 5 cards, and you may swap any of them, once, before the first turn. That is your only mulligan. Use it.
On your turn you spend Foxfire to play cards, and then your creatures may attack. A creature cannot attack on the turn it arrives, so anything you play this turn is a promise, not a threat.
You may hold 7 cards and field 7 creatures. Reduce the enemy hero to zero to win.
π₯ The first thing that is different: you BURN cards for Foxfire
There is no automatic ramp. You feed the Foxfire yourself, by burning a card from your hand into the basin at the centre of the arena.
A burned card is gone. What you get back is a token of that card's realm.
That is the whole game in one sentence. Every turn asks you which card you are willing to destroy to play a different one. A hand full of expensive cards is not a strong hand, it is a hand you cannot afford, and knowing what to feed the basin is most of the skill.
πΊοΈ The second thing: realms, and your hero's nemesis
Every card belongs to a realm, and so does your hero. Your hero's standing with a card's realm decides what that card costs you, and whether you may use it at all.
There are four realms: The Verdant Hollow, Domain of Negafook, The Spirit Veil and The Scorched Expanse.
| Your hero's realm | +1 foxfire | +2 foxfire | Cannot be used | |---|---|---|---| | The Verdant Hollow | Domain of Negafook | The Scorched Expanse | The Spirit Veil | | Domain of Negafook | The Verdant Hollow | The Spirit Veil | The Scorched Expanse | | The Spirit Veil | The Scorched Expanse | Domain of Negafook | The Verdant Hollow | | The Scorched Expanse | The Spirit Veil | The Verdant Hollow | Domain of Negafook |
Cards of your own realm, and neutral cards, always cost their printed price.
Read the last column again, because it is the one that matters. Every hero has a nemesis realm they simply cannot use. Choosing a hero is choosing what you give up.
π οΈ Building a deck
- 30 to 35 cards.
- You may keep 6 decks.
- Each card carries its own limit on how many copies you may include.
- You cannot include a card from your hero's nemesis realm.
The builder greys out the forbidden cards rather than hiding them, which is a deliberately good decision: you can see exactly what your choice of hero cost you, instead of wondering why a card you own has vanished.
π― Where to actually start
- Practice first. No stakes, nothing at risk, and it is the cheapest place to learn what to burn.
- Campaign next. There are three campaigns, with authored rewards rather than a random drip.
- Quick Match when you want a live opponent, Duels to play a friend, and Ranks when you
want the result to count.
